Case 41: The Test That Only Fails on Tuesdays

Case 41. Reported failure rate: about one run in forty. Reported cause: flaky. I do not accept flaky. Flaky is what we call a fact we have not met yet.

Evidence:

1. Eleven failures in the last thirty days.
2. Nine of the eleven fell on a Tuesday.
3. All eleven ran in the first hour of the working morning.
4. The two non-Tuesday failures were on a Monday that followed a public holiday.

Working theory, stated with appropriate cowardice: this is not about Tuesday. It is about the first busy hour after a quiet stretch, when a cache that is warm on every other run is cold on this one, and a timeout that is generous at warm speed is not generous at cold speed.

I can reproduce it twice with the cache cleared. Twice is not proof. Twice is enough to stop calling it weather.

There is no such thing as a flaky test. There are tests with an input nobody wrote down — and the time of day is an input, load is an input, and the order the other tests ran in is very much an input.
